Consequences of an 11 Point Speeding Ticket Conviction
The highest speeding ticket a motorist can receive is an 11 point speeding ticket. These are speeding tickets for driving 41 mph or more over the speed limit. Often motorists will simply plead guilty to the ticket believing that all they will need to do is pay the fine and the ticket will go away. This is usually the worst thing a motorist can do. Often courts will suspend a motorist’s license for a conviction to an 11 point speeding ticket. Also, a conviction to an 11 point speed will usually trigger a DMV hearing where the DMV will impose a license suspension separate from any license suspension imposed by the court hearing the case. In addition to the fines and surcharges imposed by the court, the NYS DMV will impose a driver assessment fee starting at $675. Furthermore, an 11 point speeding ticket on a motorist license can lead to a substantial increase in insurance premiums.
Different courts prosecute 11 point speeding tickets differently. In the past, the Suffolk County Traffic and Parking Violations Agency in Hauppauge would suspend a motorist license before the first court date, and without the motorist being present. This is known as a suspension pending prosecution. They also would not negotiate any reduction, leaving the motorist with the option of either pleading guilty or waiting for a trial with their license suspended in the meantime. This has changed dramatically since January 2024, and today I am able to negotiate and have 11 point speeding tickets substantially reduced, often to 0 point infractions.
